Trump says goodbye to Musk: techno-billionaire quits as head of DOGE

U.S. President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk held a joint press conference to officially announce Musk’s departure from his role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

This is his last day. But to be honest, he’ll never truly leave — he’ll always be with us to help every step of the way, Trump remarked.

Musk, in turn, emphasized that he remains a “friend” of the president and is always ready to offer advice “whenever he needs it.” “I hope so,” Trump responded.

The president praised Musk’s contributions, highlighting that under his leadership DOGE saved the government billions of dollars, launched sweeping reforms, and brought new talent into Washington.

He started the most comprehensive and meaningful government reform program in generations, Trump said.

Musk made it clear that his departure does not mark the end but rather the beginning of a new chapter for DOGE. According to him, the team will continue its work, grow stronger, and further increase the effectiveness of its reforms.

In just 130 days under Musk’s leadership, DOGE reduced the number of federal employees by 260,000 — a 12% cut — and slashed bureaucratic spending. According to Musk, the department saved between $150 and $175 billion.
