The European Union has decided to extend the suspension of trade restrictions on Ukrainian iron and steel imports for another three years.
The move, officially adopted by the Council of the EU, is intended to bolster Ukraine’s economy as it continues to grapple with the ongoing Russian invasion.
The regulation, which will take effect on June 6, 2025, allows Ukrainian exporters to continue bypassing safeguard measures that were originally introduced in 2018 to shield European industries from an oversupply of global steel and iron.
While the suspension supports Ukraine’s access to the EU market, the European Commission retains the authority to reinstate restrictions on specific products. This could occur if import levels of Ukrainian goods rise to the point of threatening or seriously damaging EU producers. Such measures could be reimposed for up to 12 months if deemed necessary.
