EU sounds the alarm: rising deaths, counterfeit medicines and drug-related violence

In 2023, around 7,500 people in Europe died from drug overdoses — mainly due to opioids and synthetic drugs, according to a new report from the European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA).

Key threats include counterfeit painkillers containing powerful substances like nitazenes, record levels of cocaine trafficking, and the growing popularity of synthetic cannabinoids. Criminal networks are increasingly using the internet and new methods to distribute drugs.

Over the past year, EU authorities seized 419 tonnes of cocaine — with Belgium, Spain, and the Netherlands leading in seizures. They also uncovered 14 heroin labs and 34 cocaine production sites. The report notes a surge in drug-related violence.

Cannabis remains the most commonly used illegal drug in Europe, with 24 million users. However, there are growing concerns about synthetic additives being mixed into cannabis products.

EUDA is calling for stronger prevention efforts, expanded treatment options, and tougher action against the drug trade.
