French authorities are considering officially designating Elon Musk’s social media platform X as a pornographic site — a move that could trigger strict age verification requirements for users.
According to Politico, France’s Ministry for Digital Affairs has tasked the team of Minister Clara Chappaz with examining the possibility of adding X to the list of websites required to restrict access to adult content and implement reliable age verification systems.
Speaking on French television, Chappaz stated that X “will soon face the same obligations as YouPorn,” meaning the platform must either limit explicit content or ensure that all users undergo age checks.
Under French law, pornographic platforms must implement such mechanisms by June 7. Failure to comply could result in hefty fines, removal from search engines, or even a full ban within France.
The platform is also under increasing pressure from the European Commission. In 2024, X received an official warning for inadequate measures to combat disinformation and illegal content. The EU is expected to impose sanctions in the summer of 2025 for violations under the Digital Services Act (DSA).
