This weekend, air temperatures in Germany could reach up to 37°C, according to warnings from the German National Meteorological Service (DWD). The country is expected to experience a short but intense heatwave coinciding with the days around the summer solstice.
On Saturday, which marks the official start of astronomical summer, temperatures in the western part of the country may reach 33°C. A light breeze is expected along the coast, which should slightly ease the feeling of heat.
The highest temperatures are forecast for Sunday, with southwestern regions possibly seeing thermometers climb to 37°C. In most parts of the country, temperatures are expected to range between 31°C and 35°C.
The absolute temperature record recorded by the DWD stands at 41.2°C (July 2019). The highest June temperature observed was 39.6°C, also recorded in 2019.
According to forecasters, heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected in western and northwestern Germany by Sunday evening, which will bring a temporary drop in temperatures. The nighttime storms are expected to move toward eastern and southeastern regions.
