Liberal Party prevails in Canadian election, but misses majority mark

Canada’s ruling Liberal Party, under the leadership of Prime Minister Mark Carney, is expected to remain in power following the latest parliamentary elections, though it appears unlikely to achieve a clear majority.

To govern without relying on other parties, the Liberals would need to claim at least 172 out of the 343 available seats in the House of Commons. As of the latest tally, they were ahead or had secured victory in 161 districts. The opposition Conservatives trailed closely, with wins or leads in 150 constituencies. Vote counting is still underway.

The final outcome could hinge on results from British Columbia, the last province to close its polls. Early projections from regional media indicate that the Liberals may fall short of the threshold required for a majority government.

This marks the fourth consecutive election win for the Liberal Party, a streak that began in 2004.

Neither Prime Minister Carney nor Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has yet issued a statement on the preliminary results.
