Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico underwent three surgeries following the assassination attempt against him in May 2024, Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák revealed during the O 5 minút 12 television program.
Robert Fico’s condition was very serious — he underwent three operations. At the time, we officially disclosed only two, said Kaliňák. He explained that the third procedure was kept confidential to avoid causing public alarm or unnecessary concern.
The attack occurred on May 15, 2024, in the town of Handlová, following an off-site government meeting. Fico sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The shooter, identified as 71-year-old Juraj Cintula, was apprehended at the scene. Fico had previously voiced strong opposition to arms shipments to Ukraine and to Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO.
Fico was discharged from the hospital in late May and continued his recovery at home. He resumed his official duties in July 2024.
According to Slovakia’s Interior Ministry, Cintula acted out of political motives, opposing the government’s policies, including its decision to halt military aid to Ukraine. During the investigation, the charges were upgraded from attempted murder to a terrorist act.
Cintula remains in custody. His trial is scheduled to begin on July 8 in the city of Banská Bystrica. If convicted, he could face a life sentence.
