Orbán threatens EU budget veto over frozen funds

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has warned of a veto on the upcoming long-term European Union budget if Hungary is not allowed access to funds that have been blocked due to alleged rule of law and corruption concerns.

In a radio interview, Orbán stated that he would block the next seven-year EU budget, which starts in 2028 and requires unanimous approval from all 27 member states, unless Hungary’s access to these funds is restored.

“Hungary will undoubtedly receive these funds. The money that we do not receive in 2025 and 2026 will have to be provided in 2027 and 2028, because if we do not, the EU will not have a budget, as I will not agree to it,” he said.

Reports indicate that investors view the €20 billion currently withheld by the EU as a significant economic vulnerability for Hungary.
