Trump repeats controversial comments on taking control of Canada and Greenland

President-elect Donald Trump has once again floated the idea of the United States taking control of Canada and Greenland, making the remarks following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation.

Trudeau stepped down on Monday after nearly a decade in power, citing internal struggles and an unproductive government. “This country deserves a real choice,” the former leader said, bringing an end to his tenure.

In response, Trump shared his thoughts on his Truth Social platform, suggesting that if Canada were to merge with the US, it would eliminate tariffs, reduce taxes, and provide greater security against Russian and Chinese threats.

He further claimed, “The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned.” This isn’t the first time Trump has floated the idea of Canada joining the US. In December, he stated that “many” Canadians were in favor of such a merger, though a recent Leger poll shows only about 13% support for the idea.

Trudeau’s resignation, coming just weeks before Trump’s inauguration, raised concerns among some critics about the timing, particularly with Trump threatening to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods on his first day in office.

Trump also revisited his previous musings about the US taking control of Greenland, sharing on social media: “I am hearing that the people of Greenland are ‘MAGA’. My son, Don Jr., and various representatives will be traveling there to visit some of the most magnificent areas and sights.”

“Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our nation,” Trump wrote, while mentioning that his son would soon be visiting the region.
