The prefecture of the northern French department of Nord reported the deaths of two people as a result of heavy snowfall and icy conditions.
According to the French newspaper La Croix, citing the prefecture’s press office, two fatalities and at least 20 minor injuries have been recorded in the Nord department during the snowstorm that has persisted since Wednesday, January 8. Additionally, in the neighboring department of Pas-de-Calais, three people were injured in a car accident related to the weather.
Adverse weather conditions in the northern Hauts-de-France region, which includes Nord and Pas-de-Calais, have disrupted school transport services. The Pas-de-Calais prefecture also imposed restrictions on the movement of heavy goods vehicles to ensure road safety.
An “orange” weather alert, indicating a heightened level of danger, was in effect in the Nord department on Thursday, January 9. This warning is set to be reissued at 10:00 PM local time the same day and will remain in place until the morning of Friday, January 10.
