Thousands of supporters of the right-wing party “Alliance for the Union of Romanians” (AUR) took to the streets of Bucharest on January 12, protesting against the Constitutional Court’s decision to annul the results of the first round of the presidential elections.
According to the organizers, around 50,000 people participated in the rally. Protesters marched from the presidential residence, the Cotroceni Palace—where they chanted slogans demanding the resignation of President Klaus Iohannis—to Victory Square.
AUR leader George Simion, who led the march, stated that Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu and President Klaus Iohannis should step down. He also emphasized that the authorities must “hear the voice of more than 100,000 Romanians.”
The demonstration was accompanied by minor incidents, including verbal confrontations with journalists. Earlier this week, supporters of independent candidate Călin Georgescu, who won the first round of the elections, held protests in Bucharest. However, the election results were annulled due to suspicions of interference in the voting process.
