A fire broke out on the Rospo Mare B oil platform in the Adriatic Sea, near the coast of Italy. The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 22, at around 2:00 PM local time, according to Il Sole 24 Ore.
Energean, the company managing the platform, declared a state of emergency and began evacuating personnel. At the time of the fire, 26 people were on the platform, all of whom were successfully evacuated. According to the Italian Coast Guard, the operation was challenging but resulted in no injuries.
Experts confirmed that an oil spill into the sea was avoided. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and inspections are ongoing to assess the damage.
Rospo Mare B is located in the oil field of the same name, approximately 20 kilometers off the coast of Italy’s Abruzzo region. The platform has been operational since the 1980s.
