Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced the imposition of 25% tariffs on goods from Colombia in response to Bogotá’s refusal to accept two flights carrying Colombians deported from the U.S. He made the announcement on his social network, Truth Social.
Trump warned that the tariffs could be increased to 50% in a week. In addition to the economic measures, the U.S. president imposed a ban on the entry of Colombian diplomats and revoked visas for members of the Colombian government and their families. Enhanced customs and border checks have also been introduced for all Colombian citizens.
Trump promised to introduce additional financial and banking sanctions against the country. In response to these measures, Colombian President Gustavo Petro instructed authorities to address the situation of 15,000 Americans living illegally in Colombia.
