The Rome Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and two members of her government.
The case concerns the repatriation of a Libyan field commander wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. According to the investigation, Meloni, along with Justice Minister Carlo Nordio and Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, is suspected of facilitating the release and repatriation of Usama Najim, also known as al-Masri. The field commander was arrested in Turin under an ICC warrant but was later released due to legal technicalities.
Meloni responded to the accusations, stating: “I cannot be blackmailed or intimidated.” The actions of the Italian government have faced sharp criticism from the opposition, human rights organizations, and representatives of the International Criminal Court.
