U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to postpone the introduction of tariffs on Canadian goods for 30 days after a conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The delay comes in exchange for promises regarding border security and efforts to combat drug trafficking.
Justin Trudeau stated that he informed Trump about Canada’s plan to strengthen border security, which includes $1.3 billion in measures—enhancing physical and technical surveillance, deploying around 10,000 personnel, and increasing cooperation with the U.S. This plan was originally announced by Ottawa in mid-December, but at the time, it was apparently not enough to sway Trump’s opinion.
Additionally, Trudeau mentioned Canada’s new commitments, including appointing a special official to combat drug trafficking, designating cartels as terrorist organizations, and establishing a joint U.S.-Canada task force to counter organized crime, drug trafficking, and money laundering.
“The proposed tariffs will be suspended for at least 30 days while we continue to cooperate,” he stated.
