Germany is encouraging asylum seekers with refugee status in Greece to return there.
A small group of individuals, who had been granted protection in Greece but later applied for asylum in Germany, are receiving information about the possibility of voluntary return. These individuals include those whose German asylum applications are either ongoing or deemed inadmissible.
The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) has begun sending letters outlining the support available in Greece, such as housing, food, social services, and integration programs like language classes and job assistance.
This initiative comes ahead of Germany’s elections, as part of efforts to manage migration. A recent court ruling allowed asylum seekers with protection in Greece to apply for asylum in Germany due to poor living conditions in Greece. However, with Greece’s economy improving and unemployment decreasing, the German government is now promoting the voluntary return of those granted asylum there.
