Romanian presidential candidate Călin Georgescu has been detained in Romania

Romanian police have stunned the nation by arresting opposition leader Calin Georgescu, a fiery critic of NATO and EU aid to Ukraine, just as his campaign for the presidency gained momentum.
On February 25, 2025, authorities swooped in, targeting Georgescu and his supporters, raiding homes linked to his bid and freezing dozens of accounts. Wow, what a blow! The drama unfolded after the Constitutional Court annulled the first round of the presidential election in November, citing intelligence reports of “irregularities” in Georgescu’s campaign. Barely a day after his arrest, as he prepared to file his candidacy anew, police pulled him over, questioning him at the Prosecutor General’s Office.
His team cried foul on Facebook, slamming the move as a blatant attack on democracy. “Where’s the transparency? Where are the partners who must defend democracy?” they demanded, rallying supporters in a fiery post.
Georgescu’s communications squad blasted the Romanian-Bolshevik system, accusing authorities of cooking up “obvious abuses” to sabotage the election and derail his presidential run. They charge that officials are twisting evidence to justify the arrest and block his path forward.
The Prosecutor General’s Office, now probing Georgescu, is reportedly digging into alleged ties to extremist ideologies and far-right figures in the public eye, citing “G4Media” reports of police discoveries—weapons, live ammunition, and millions hidden in a safe.
Following the raids, Georgescu’s arrest sparked outrage, with crowds gathering outside the Prosecutor General’s office, chanting his name. George Simion, leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) party, rallied his MPs to storm the office, demanding answers. Digiz4 quoted Simion vowing unwavering support for Georgescu, insisting, “Until undeniable evidence surfaces, we suspect this is political policing.” He added, “Not a shred of proof has been presented so far,” leaving many questioning the motives behind this dramatic crackdown.
