Former U.S. President Donald Trump does not consider the European Union an ally, instead perceiving it as an opponent of America. This was reported by the Spanish newspaper El País citing sources.
According to the publication, on Wednesday, Trump stated that the EU was created to “annoy” the U.S., which has raised concerns among European leaders. The newspaper notes that such statements reflect his skeptical stance towards European institutions, especially amid long-standing trade disagreements with Brussels.
European leaders, in general, preferred not to make public comments in response to Trump’s remarks. However, as El País reports, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented on the situation, stating that the EU “does not intend to condemn anyone.”
Earlier, Trump announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on EU goods, including cars, which has heightened tensions in trade relations between the U.S. and Europe. He also emphasized that his administration seeks to build “excellent relations” with China, Russia, Ukraine, and Middle Eastern countries, but believes that the EU was created to “deceive” the U.S. economically.
