Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has called for an investigation into “corrupt funding from Brussels” after alleging that both Brussels and the US had sent “corrupt dollars” to Hungary to influence public opinion.
In an interview with public radio on Friday, Orbán claimed that these funds were intended to sway the Hungarian public in favor of foreign interests rather than the will of the Hungarian people. “That must also be cleared up,” he stated.
The Prime Minister accused Brussels of funding individuals in Hungary to represent not the Hungarian government or the will of the people, as expressed through referendums, but to push Brussels’ agenda. Orbán stated that this was even more egregious than US interference, as the EU was using money from member states to manipulate Hungarian policies, such as those concerning utility price reductions.
Orbán also announced that legislation to prevent such interference in the future would be adopted by Easter. Additionally, he pointed to the “coffers of the Soros network” as another source of funding to be investigated.
