The Constitutional Court of Romania has made a final decision in the case of politician Victor Georgescu, rejecting his appeal. This means that one of the most popular candidates will be unable to participate in the presidential elections scheduled for May 2025.
Following the announcement of the court’s decision, thousands of Georgescu’s supporters took to the streets in Bucharest to protest. Shouts of “Traitors!” were heard outside the court building, and some activists attempted to break through to the entrance, demanding a reconsideration of the ruling. The police reinforced security measures, fearing possible clashes.
The leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) party, George Simion, urgently convened a party leadership meeting to discuss the next steps. According to insider information, the party is expected to announce a new candidate in the coming days who, if successfully registered, could automatically become the frontrunner in the race.
