Hungary proposes constitutional amendments to limit LGBTQ+ pride

Hungary’s ruling party, Fidesz, has introduced a draft amendment to the constitution that could potentially ban the annual LGBTQ+ pride march and allow for the expulsion of individuals with dual citizenship if they are considered a threat to the country’s sovereignty.

The proposed amendment would prioritize the protection of children’s physical, mental, and moral development over all other rights, suggesting that the government’s responsibility to safeguard children’s well-being could override the right to assemble. This could set the stage for prohibiting the LGBTQ+ pride event if deemed harmful to children.

Another aspect of the proposal would allow for the expulsion of individuals who hold both Hungarian and foreign citizenship, if their actions are deemed a threat to Hungary’s sovereignty, public order, territorial integrity, or security.

Additionally, the changes include a proposal to enshrine in the constitution the recognition of only two genders—male and female—and to secure the right to cash payments, reflecting the concerns of right-wing groups who have expressed distrust in banks.
