Estonian parliament rejects bill to close border with Russia

The Riigikogu (Estonian Parliament) rejected a bill on Thursday, March 20, that proposed ordering the government to close the Estonia-Russia border. The bill was initiated by the Isamaa party.

The proposal was supported by 14 MPs, while 61 voted against it, leading to its rejection.

Isamaa leader Urmas Reinsalu justified the bill by citing several hybrid attacks that he claimed Russia had carried out against Estonia and its allied countries.

In his view, given the current security situation, closing the Estonia-Russia border would be appropriate, and Estonia’s security agencies and government have the necessary technical capabilities and legal grounds to do so.
