Polish President signs law suspending the right to asylum

Polish President Andrzej Duda has approved a new law temporarily restricting the right to asylum, sparking widespread public debate. This was reported by RMF FM.

Speaking before his departure to Rome, Duda stated that the law is necessary to protect Poland’s borders and ensure the safety of its citizens.

I have decided that the so-called asylum law, which has been actively discussed in recent times, will come into effect. I have signed it because I believe it is essential for strengthening our security, the president said.

The law grants the government the authority to implement measures to restrict migration, including the ability to suspend the processing of asylum applications. It has been supported by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, as well as Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.

Authorities plan to launch an informational campaign in foreign languages to warn potential migrants about the new restrictions and discourage them from attempting to cross the border illegally.

Under the law, the suspension of the right to asylum will apply to specific areas for up to 60 days, with the possibility of extension by parliamentary decision. However, exceptions are made for unaccompanied minors, pregnant women, and particularly vulnerable individuals, who will still be able to apply for asylum.
