U.S. President Donald Trump has announced his readiness to impose stricter trade tariffs on the European Union and Canada if these countries join forces in ways that harm the U.S. economy.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump emphasized that Washington would respond to such cooperation by introducing even tougher tariffs than previously planned. Earlier, he had already announced that a 25% tariff on imported cars would take effect in April.
France has urged the EU to prepare countermeasures against potential trade restrictions from the U.S. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that Brussels would continue to seek diplomatic solutions while protecting the bloc’s economic interests.
Previously, the European Commission also announced possible countermeasures against U.S. imports worth up to €26 billion in response to U.S. tariffs on European steel and aluminum.
