Ecuador cockfighting mass shooting: 12 dead, suspects arrested

A mass shooting at an illegal cockfighting event in Ecuador has left 12 people dead and several others injured. According to police, the attack was carried out by a group of armed individuals dressed in military-style clothing commonly associated with drug cartel operatives.

The incident took place inside a venue where the bloody fights were being held. Surveillance footage captured at least five assailants armed with automatic rifles storming into the building and opening fire on the crowd. Panic broke out as spectators tried to hide behind seats, but many were unable to escape the gunfire.

Shortly after the attack, police discovered two abandoned vehicles — one burned, the other overturned — along with clothing matching what the attackers had worn.

Authorities later arrested four suspects believed to be connected to Los R7, a criminal gang operating in the country. Police released video footage of the suspects, though their faces were blurred for security reasons.

During the raids, officers seized a substantial arsenal: eight automatic rifles, four handguns, three shotguns, large quantities of ammunition, mobile phones, and tactical gear, including gloves.

The investigation is ongoing, as Ecuadorian authorities continue their efforts to curb rising violence fueled by organized crime across the country.
