Tragedy struck outside Springfield, Illinois, on Monday afternoon when a car plowed through an after-school camp building, killing four children and injuring several others, according to police.
Officers responded to reports around 3:20 p.m. (22:30 CET) of a vehicle that fatally struck three people outside the YNOT After School Camp, before crashing through the building and hitting another individual, Chatham Police Department Deputy Chief Scott Tarter said.
The victims killed ranged in age from 4 to 18, according to a statement from Illinois State Police.
Several other individuals were injured and transported to hospitals for treatment, authorities said. The driver, who was alone in the vehicle and was not injured, was also taken to a hospital for evaluation. Illinois State Police have not yet confirmed whether the driver has been arrested or taken into custody.
