Spain’s National Court has partially classified the investigation into a major power outage that occurred on April 28 across the Iberian Peninsula, according to an official press release from the judiciary.
Judge José Luis Calama stated that the decision was made at the request of the public prosecutor to maintain confidentiality and prevent any information leaks that could compromise the investigation or the security of critical infrastructure.
As part of the inquiry, authorities are considering cyber sabotage as a possible cause of the disruption in the power system. The blackout affected large parts of Spain, including Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, and other cities, as well as areas of Portugal, France, and Andorra.
The outage led to a halt in railway operations, widespread traffic disruptions due to non-functioning traffic lights, and reports of people trapped in elevators. Many stores also experienced technical issues. Power was fully restored only after 24 hours. The exact cause of the incident is still under investigation.
