Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution has officially classified the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party as a right-wing extremist organization, citing its xenophobic views as a serious threat to the country’s democratic framework.
On Friday, the office declared AfD a dangerous entity, highlighting its discriminatory stances on ethnicity, which they argue target non-ethnic Germans. This designation, which had previously applied to specific sections of the party, now extends to the party as a whole.
AfD’s performance in the February elections placed it second, trailing only the center-right CDU and ahead of the center-left SPD, the two parties that will form the new government.
Though the decision may lead to calls for the party’s dissolution by the German parliament, any such move would require confirmation by the Constitutional Court. However, experts believe that this outcome is unlikely.
