Stephen Miller, one of Donald Trump’s closest advisers and a key advocate of hardline immigration policies, is being considered the leading candidate for the role of U.S. National Security Advisor, according to Axios, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Miller currently serves as Deputy Chief of Staff and oversees domestic security issues. According to the report, he has already expressed interest in the position following Trump’s decision to nominate former National Security Advisor Mike Waltz as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been appointed as acting head of the National Security Council, but Axios sources note that he is already overwhelmed with his duties at the State Department.
One White House official stated that Miller has made the Domestic Policy Council “run like clockwork” and significantly more effective than the National Security Council, despite having a much smaller team. It is also noted that Trump often assigns multiple key roles to his closest advisers, so Miller may take on the new position while retaining his current responsibilities.
