The U.S. Department of Defense has announced the successful test of a sea-based hypersonic missile launch system at Cape Canaveral, Florida. The test was conducted on May 2, according to the Pentagon.
According to the statement, this marks the first launch of a missile capable of rapid strike using cold launch technology. This method ejects the missile from the ship’s platform before ignition, allowing it to activate at a safe distance. The technology is intended for use in U.S. Navy sea-launched hypersonic missiles.
U.S. Secretary of the Navy John F. Felen emphasized that “the speed, range, and survivability of hypersonic weapons are critical to America’s integrated deterrence.”
The test aims to help the U.S. close the technological gap with Russia and China in the field of hypersonic weapons.
