Chancellor Merz rules out sending German soldiers to Ukraine

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has expressed that he does not foresee German soldiers being deployed to Ukraine.

“This issue is not even on the agenda right now,” Merz said in an interview on Welt TV.

“We are far from a ceasefire and even further from a peace agreement,” he remarked.

Merz also commented on the three-day truce in Ukraine, declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin to mark the end of World War II. He noted that the ceasefire “could have been extended,” but added, “That completely depends on the Russian government.”

Merz had previously announced plans to visit Ukraine in the near future.

During his first visit to Poland, Germany’s new foreign minister, Johann Wadephul, reaffirmed Germany and Europe’s commitment to supporting Ukraine.
