The European Parliament has voted to prolong the suspension of tariffs and quotas on Ukrainian steel and iron imports for another three years, maintaining the current trade arrangement set to expire on June 6, 2025.
This move was formalized in the legislative resolution titled “Suspension of Certain Provisions of Regulation (EU) 2015/478 on the Import of Ukrainian Products into the European Union,” which was approved on May 8, 2025, and obtained by European Pravda.
Under the resolution, Ukrainian producers will be able to continue exporting steel and iron to the EU without paying customs duties until June 5, 2028. According to the European Parliament’s press service, “The European Commission is currently working on a long-term solution to ensure greater economic transparency in trade relations between the EU and Ukraine.”
“Ukraine’s metallurgical industry is the backbone of the country’s economy. It continues to operate despite many workers going to the front lines and plants suffering brutal attacks from Russia,” said Swedish MEP Karin Karlsbro of the Renew Europe group, who served as rapporteur for the resolution.
The measure passed with the support of 354 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), while 147 opposed it and 53 abstained.
The regulation will officially take effect following endorsement by the EU Council and its publication.
