Orban backed Fico’s criticism of EU plan to reject Russian gas

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has joined Slovakian counterpart Robert Fico in criticizing the European Commission’s proposed roadmap to end the import of Russian energy resources.

Orban expressed his stance on X, where he noted his support for Fico’s view. He also reiterated that Hungarian families will not finance Ukraine’s accession to the EU, despite the fact that this statement is not directly related to the issue of phasing out Russian gas.

Robert Fico is right. President Ursula von der Leyen’s plan will lead to Europe’s bankruptcy and impose an unbearable burden on the families of Central Europe. We will not allow Brussels to make Hungarian families pay for Ukraine’s accession to the EU! Orban wrote.

Fico had previously stated that the European Commission’s roadmap, in its current form, is unacceptable to the Slovak government.

On May 6, the European Commission unveiled a plan under which the EU is expected to completely stop importing Russian gas by 2027 and significantly reduce its imports of Russian oil.
