American intelligence agencies have been instructed to increase data collection efforts concerning the situation in Greenland — an autonomous territory of Denmark that President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in acquiring.
According to The Wall Street Journal, which cites two informed sources, U.S. intelligence leaders received a directive last week emphasizing the priority of monitoring developments in Greenland. Such directives typically guide the allocation of resources and set strategic focus areas for intelligence operations.
Specifically, agencies have been tasked with studying the island’s independence movement, local attitudes toward potential U.S. exploitation of natural resources, and identifying Greenlanders with pro-American sentiments.
This move marks one of the Trump administration’s first concrete steps toward pursuing the president’s frequently stated idea of acquiring Greenland.
Previously, Trump had even suggested that the use of military force to assert control over the island was not off the table.
In Denmark, such statements have drawn sharp criticism and have been labeled as unacceptable.
