German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has expressed hope that an agreement on a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine could be reached this coming weekend, Bild reports.
According to Merz, Russia’s announcement of a three-day truce presents a “major opportunity” to extend the pause in fighting to 30 days, potentially paving the way for peace negotiations.
Bild notes that Merz has discussed the situation with U.S. President Donald Trump, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and also held meetings with the leaders of France, Poland, and the United Kingdom. Following these talks, a joint statement was issued that closely mirrors U.S. proposals for conflict resolution.
A day earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had a phone call with Donald Trump, after which the American leader called for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire across all of Ukraine.
