Trump pushes for Ukraine ceasefire after call with Zelensky, awaiting Moscow’s response

President Donald Trump has called for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine following a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump shared the proposal on Truth Social, warning of potential consequences if the ceasefire is violated.

“If the ceasefire is not upheld, the U.S. and its partners will impose additional sanctions,” Donald Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform. “Together with the Europeans, I will strive to establish peace between Russia and Ukraine, and it will be a lasting peace!” the U.S. President declared.

Zelensky described the phone call as “good” and noted that the two discussed “the need for concrete steps toward peace.”

“Ukraine is ready for a 30-day ceasefire starting today. We are waiting for an agreement from Russia. Ukraine is ready for negotiations in any format. But Russia must demonstrate seriousness in its intentions,” Zelensky emphasized. On May 7, he once again proposed halting all military actions for at least 30 days.

So far, the Kremlin has not issued a formal reply to either Trump’s appeal or Zelensky’s offer. A previously declared ceasefire by President Vladimir Putin, tied to Victory Day commemorations, is due to end at midnight on May 11.

Meanwhile, Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov commented on state television that there is “movement toward a meeting between the leaders of Russia and the U.S.,” noting that Washington “understands Moscow’s demands.” However, he added that “Washington is disappointing Moscow even more than Russia is falling short of U.S. expectations.”
