US and Iran resume nuclear talks amid deep divisions over enrichment

Negotiators from Iran and the United States are set to resume discussions on Sunday in Muscat, aiming to resolve disputes surrounding Tehran’s nuclear program ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump’s upcoming visit to the Middle East.

While both sides have expressed a preference for diplomatic solutions, major disagreements remain on several key issues. The fourth round of talks will take place with mediation from Oman, involving Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.

Before his departure, Araghchi told Iranian state television that “Iran has a well-known position based on clear principles.” He added that a team of Iranian experts is already in Oman and “will be consulted if necessary.”

Witkoff has previously made clear that the U.S. position is: “No enrichment. That means dismantling, no military use,” referring specifically to Iran’s nuclear sites in Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan.

In response, Araghchi said Saturday that Iran will not compromise on its nuclear rights, which include uranium enrichment.

Iranian officials have indicated a willingness to negotiate limits on nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. However, they maintain that demands to halt enrichment or give up uranium stockpiles are “Iran’s red lines that are not subject to compromise.”

A senior Iranian official close to the negotiations added that the U.S. insistence on “zero enrichment and dismantling of Iran’s nuclear facilities will not help advance the talks.”
