Chemicals warehouse fire near Seville: 80,000 people at risk

An explosion followed by a fire broke out at a chemical warehouse in Seville, putting around 80,000 local residents in a danger zone and isolating them from the outside world. As a result, a first-level emergency alert has been declared in the region.

The incident occurred in the industrial area of Alcalá de Guadaíra, a town near Seville in southern Spain. After the explosion at the warehouse storing various chemicals, a cloud of toxic smoke rose into the air. Due to the risk of poisoning, residents have been advised to stay indoors.

The cause of the explosion is still unknown. All warehouse employees managed to evacuate, but one person suffered burns and was hospitalized. Authorities have already evacuated residents from several nearby homes.

The smoke cloud has spread so widely that it was visible even in municipalities located more than 80 kilometers from the site of the incident.

Regional authorities in Andalusia have described the situation as “alarming” due to the scale of the fire and the hazardous materials burning. Firefighters from neighboring towns have been mobilized to extinguish the blaze.

Residents in the danger zone received emergency alerts through the Es-Alert mobile app, advising them to close windows and doors, avoid going outside, and wear protective masks.

The warehouse covers an area of about 11,000 square meters. It belongs to Plainsur, a company that sells and supplies various chemicals, including sulfuric, oxalic, and phosphoric acids, as well as solvents and oils.
