Romania’s right-wing presidential candidate closes TikTok account ahead of elections

George Simion, the right-wing Romanian presidential candidate, has deactivated his TikTok account with 1.5 million followers on the eve of the election’s second round. He cited compliance with the “electoral silence day” as the reason for the move.

According to HotNews, social media users noticed that Simion’s popular TikTok account had become inaccessible. TikTok representatives later confirmed to journalists that the account was taken down by the candidate himself.

Simion subsequently acknowledged this and announced that he would also temporarily restrict access to his Facebook page. For the next 24 hours, he plans to communicate exclusively through his official profile on X (formerly Twitter).

In response to a media inquiry, Simion—through his press office—accused HotNews of violating electoral silence and allegedly favoring his pro-European rival, Nicușor Dan.

Meanwhile, voting in the second round has already begun for the Romanian diaspora. Turnout has increased by 86% compared to the first round.

Moldova is seeing particularly high participation, where local authorities and prominent figures within the Romanian community have urged people to vote and support Nicușor Dan. In this context, Simion has accused Moldovan authorities of election fraud.

The main vote within Romania is scheduled for Sunday, May 18.
