EU and UK move closer to a new deal to restart relations after Brexit

Negotiations between the United Kingdom and the European Union aimed at improving relations after Brexit have seen significant progress, according to The Guardian, citing sources.

A British official revealed that a “breakthrough” was achieved on Sunday evening, though the details are still being finalized. This development came just ahead of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s visit to London, where she is set to meet Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

One of the main points of contention remains the access of European fishermen to British waters, as well as sanitary checks on food products at the border. It is believed that the recent breakthrough relates specifically to fisheries. Earlier reports suggested that the two sides were close to a ten-year agreement on the issue.

The EU has insisted that the timelines for resolving the fisheries issue and food checks should align. UK Trade Minister Jonathan Reynolds declined to confirm the agreement but stated that the UK had received “a very advantageous offer.”

In addition to fisheries and trade, the talks also cover British companies’ access to EU defense programs, youth mobility schemes, and border procedures for UK citizens.

It is expected that a defense and security pact may be signed at the May 19 summit, which would allow British arms manufacturers to take part in joint EU weapons procurement.

Polls show that a majority of Britons favor restoring trade ties with the EU over pursuing a new economic agreement with the United States.
