European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa have arrived in London for the first UK-EU summit.
Von der Leyen and Costa arrived at Lancaster House, where they were welcomed by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Foreign Secretary David Lammy.
The summit was planned as a key event to “reset” relations between the United Kingdom and the European Union, following tensions and disputes left in the wake of Brexit.
Ursula von der Leyen noted that she sees “a real chance to turn the page.” It was confirmed beforehand that the UK and the EU had agreed on a defense pact and a fisheries agreement, with details to be officially announced later.
In the morning, British media reported “significant breakthroughs” in the negotiations, which continued late into Sunday night—with hopes of reaching some result before the summit began.
