The European Union has decided to lift economic sanctions against Syria. The announcement was made on May 20 by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas in a post on social media platform X.
According to Kallas, this move reflects the EU’s ongoing commitment to supporting the Syrian people, as it has done for the past 14 years, and to helping build “a new, inclusive, and peaceful Syria.”
This policy shift came after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024. In January, the EU began easing restrictions, including lifting sanctions on key sectors of the Syrian economy.
Earlier, during the Ninth International Conference on Syria held on March 17 in Brussels, participants pledged a total of €5.8 billion in aid to support the country.
