Jennifer Lopez is being sued for publishing copyrighted photos of herself

Jennifer Lopez is facing a lawsuit for posting photos of herself at a Hollywood party without obtaining permission from the photographer and the paparazzi agency that own the rights to the images.

The singer and actress shared pictures on social media showing her arrival at the Amazon MGM Studios and Vanity Fair Party in Los Angeles, held the night before the 2025 Golden Globes.

Photographer Edwin Blanco and the agency Backgrid, which he was working for, have filed separate lawsuits claiming copyright ownership of two photos. They argue that Lopez used these images “to promote her public appearances, increase user engagement, and enhance the credibility of her branded content.” Backgrid and Blanco are each seeking up to $150,000 (£112,000) in damages per photo.

The photos depict Lopez wearing a white dress and a white faux fur coat outside the Chateau Marmont party venue. She posted them on Instagram and X with the caption “GG Weekend Glamour,” and the images were widely shared by fan and fashion accounts.

According to the lawsuits, Lopez’s use of the photos was commercial, aimed at self-promotion. She allegedly highlighted the designers of her outfit and jewelry, leveraging the event’s publicity to promote her fashion partnerships and brand affiliations.

It is important to note that individuals appearing in photos do not own the copyright to the images—this right belongs to the photographer or the agency, who control usage and licensing fees.

Backgrid and Blanco reportedly reached out to Lopez’s representatives after the photos were posted and agreed on a deal and payment, but Lopez has yet to sign the agreement.
