Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó has accused Ukraine of conducting an active anti-Hungarian campaign both internationally and within Hungary itself.
According to him, Ukrainian intelligence activity in the country, including acts of espionage, has intensified.
We are witnessing increased activity by Ukrainian intelligence services and agents on Hungarian territory. At the same time, Ukraine is spreading increasingly aggressive propaganda against Hungary and the Hungarian people — both domestically and abroad. In response, we are using all legal means to defend our sovereignty, Szijjártó stated at a press conference alongside the Secretary General of the Organization of Turkic States, Kubanychbek Omuraliev.
The Hungarian foreign minister also commented on a recent statement by Roland Cebere, a member of the Zakarpattia Regional Council, whom Hungarian intelligence services have identified as a Ukrainian agent. Cebere referred to Hungary’s ruling party Fidesz as a “cornered rat” in a social media post. Szijjártó called the remark “threatening and extremely serious,” and described the close ties between opposition leader Péter Magyar and Cebere as “a disgrace.”
Amid escalating tensions, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán convened a meeting of the Defense Council on May 13. He claimed that the developments were the result of an operation by Ukrainian intelligence, allegedly carried out with the active involvement of Hungary’s opposition, aimed at disrupting a nationwide consultation on Ukraine’s potential EU membership.
