Trump has dropped his call for a ceasefire in Ukraine

U.S. President Donald Trump has abandoned his previous stance calling for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, according to the German newspaper Bild. The report follows a conversation between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Bild describes the shift as a “180-degree turn in U.S. policy toward Russia,” noting that Trump had repeatedly claimed he could “end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours” if he returned to office. However, the outlet now reports that Washington appears satisfied with Moscow’s willingness to engage in talks with Kyiv — despite the continued heavy bombardment of Ukrainian territory.

Washington is now content that Moscow is ready to negotiate with Kyiv — even though Putin continues bombing Ukraine, Bild quotes an unnamed diplomatic source as saying.

Although the details of the conversation between Trump and Putin have not been officially disclosed, German journalists emphasize that the change in tone may indicate a reassessment of Trump’s priorities amid the U.S. presidential campaign and internal pressure within the Republican Party. A potential departure from a hardline stance on Russia could also affect both domestic and international debates about the future of support for Ukraine.
