Trump unveils ambitious “Golden Dome” missile shield, drawing fire from China

U.S. President Donald Trump has pulled back the curtain on his latest defense initiative—a massive missile shield called the “Golden Dome”, aimed at shielding the U.S. from global threats, including those launched from space. With a jaw-dropping price tag and sky-high ambitions, the announcement has already sparked controversy on the international stage.

Standing at the White House on May 20, Trump told reporters that $25 billion in initial funding is now locked in for the futuristic missile defense system, which could eventually cost a staggering $175 billion by the time it’s up and running—likely within three years.

“During my campaign, I made a promise to the American people,” Trump declared. “We’d build a world-class missile defense system—and now, we’ve chosen the architecture to make that vision real.”

According to Trump, the Golden Dome will be capable of intercepting missiles from virtually anywhere on the planet—and even from orbit. “This system will stop incoming threats whether they’re launched from the other side of the world or straight out of space,” he added, framing the project as a vital step toward national security.

A Nod to Israel, a Shot Across China’s Bow

The name Golden Dome is a clear nod to Israel’s well-known Iron Dome system, which has successfully intercepted thousands of short-range rockets since its debut in 2011. Trump, long an admirer of Israel’s defense capabilities, appears to be taking that model global—and then some.

However, not everyone is applauding. Beijing wasted no time blasting the move. By Wednesday, China’s foreign ministry had issued a sharp rebuke, warning that the system would escalate global tensions and threaten international stability.

At a routine press briefing, spokesperson Mao Ning accused the U.S. of “chasing absolute security at the cost of others.” She added, “No country should seek safety by compromising the security of the rest of the world.”

China’s criticism fits into a broader concern that the U.S. could be reigniting an arms race by pushing ahead with such an expansive defense initiative.

What’s Next?

While full technical details of the Golden Dome remain under wraps, Trump’s unveiling signals a return to the kind of bold military projects that marked his first term. Supporters hail it as a proactive move to stay ahead of emerging threats, especially from adversaries with growing missile arsenals. Critics, meanwhile, warn that ballooning costs and global blowback could outweigh the benefits.

Whether the system lives up to its name or gets bogged down in politics and pushback, one thing’s for sure: Trump’s Golden Dome is already making waves both at home and abroad.
