The U.S. Department of Defense is preparing a significant reorganization of its political apparatus, during which the office responsible for Russia, Ukraine, and Eurasia affairs may be downgraded in status and incorporated into a new division overseeing Europe and NATO, according to sources cited by Defence News.
According to these sources, the new structure aims to centralize management of European affairs and coordinate interactions with NATO. As part of these changes, the Ukraine affairs office will cease to be an independent unit and will fall under the jurisdiction of a larger department.
Department of Defense representatives emphasize that this reorganization will not halt the office’s work and does not necessarily imply staff reductions. However, experts believe that such a status change could reduce the office’s influence and visibility within the overall Pentagon structure. Until earlier this year, this unit was considered one of the key players in shaping policy and coordinating assistance to Ukraine.
