The Slovak National Party (SNS), a member of Slovakia’s ruling coalition, has stated that Slovakia should seek financial compensation from Ukraine for its wartime assistance.
Zuzana Škopcová, director of the office of the SNS chairman, informed TASR on Saturday that the party believes Slovakia has the right to demand repayment.
SNS is urging Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) to initiate an official procedure within the European Union to secure a share in Ukraine’s mineral resources, a proposal they want discussed at the upcoming European Council meeting.
“Never in history has any state signed an agreement like the one President Zelensky signed with the United States. The European Union’s aid is approaching the scale of U.S. aid. If Ukraine transfers all its mineral wealth to the U.S., it will have nothing left to repay European countries for their support,” said Škopcová. She criticized the notion of exclusive U.S. rights to Ukraine’s resources, calling it “illogical and unethical toward Ukraine itself.”
SNS leader Andrej Danko plans to raise the matter with Finance Minister Ladislav Kamenický on Monday, May 26. He will request a full accounting of Slovakia’s aid to Ukraine and the preparation of supporting documents for the prime minister.
According to SNS, Slovakia’s contributions to Ukraine exceed three billion euros. The party argues that, just as the U.S. is reportedly being compensated, Slovakia and other EU nations should also be reimbursed.
“If Ukraine has already decided to pay for aid during the conflict with the Russian Federation, it is unclear why it is not doing so in relation to the European Union,” Škopcová said. SNS expects Prime Minister Fico to address this issue at the next EU summit, pressing the bloc’s leadership to take action.
