Hamburg train station attacker committed to psychiatric care, no political motive found

A 39-year-old woman involved in the knife attack at Hamburg Central Station has been placed in a psychiatric hospital, AFP reported. Authorities stated that the suspect, who is homeless and has a history of mental illness, acted without political motivation.

According to Bild, the woman had received psychiatric treatment multiple times in the past and had previously come to the attention of law enforcement. Unconfirmed reports suggest she was released from psychiatric care just one day before the incident.

Police credited the “very swift intervention” of two civilians and a patrol unit with stopping the attack. They also confirmed there is no current evidence that the suspect was under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the assault.

The stabbing took place on the evening of May 23, injuring 18 people. Four victims were initially listed in critical condition, but by midday on May 24, their condition had improved. Hamburg Mayor Peter Tschentscher wrote on X that several of the injured have already been discharged, though he did not specify how many.
