Nearly one in four schoolchildren in Germany are using artificial intelligence tools to help with their homework, according to a new survey by the federal digital industry association Bitkom.
The study, which surveyed 502 students aged 14 to 19, highlights both enthusiasm and skepticism about AI’s role in education.
According to 23% of respondents, AI provides clearer explanations than their teachers. Many also reported that AI assistance was more effective than help from their own parents. In total, 53% of students believe that using AI has improved their academic performance.
However, the technology’s impact is not viewed positively by all. Nearly half (48%) of the students surveyed feel that relying on AI makes them less intelligent. A similar share think AI should be banned for use in completing homework.
“If used correctly, AI can become an important tool for providing individualized support to students in the learning process, as well as easing the burden on teachers,” said Bitkom head Bernhard Rohleder. A ban on artificial intelligence, on the other hand, does not reflect the reality of today’s schools, he added.
